COSMOS

2020 COSMOS Technical Session (To be held January 2021)

Time & Location

The COSMOS Technical Session will be held virtually Wednesday and Thursday, January 27 and 28 from 11 AM to 2 PM Pacific each day.

About the Annual Technical Session Series

The annual technical session provides a forum for seismologists and seismic engineers to come together and discuss issues related to the use of earth science data (including earthquake recordings) by the engineering community.

About the 2020 COSMOS Technical Session

The COSMOS 2020 Technical Session will be held virtually this year to honor the health and well being of everyone. We have postponed the Technical Session to January 2021 to allow more time to prepare for what is a new format and software platform for us.

When organizing the COSMOS 2020 Technical Session, we put a lot of thought into trying to give our virtual event some flavor of the special sauce that makes our annual technical session so popular; namely, the incredibly interactions that happen during the event. We come up with an approach and platform that we hope facilitates interactions far more than a typical zoom conference.

The Approach for Our First Virtual Conference

We are organizing around an approach that minimize the set (scheduled) times participants must be in front of a computer, while maximizing time for live discussions. Technical Session will have 2 parts:

  1. A pre-event presentation viewing period - A series of 20 minute pre-recorded presentations will be available for viewing at participants convenience through the month of December.
  2. A live event - The live event presentations will start with 5-minute "flash" presentation versions of the pre-recorded talks to refresh memories and get everyone on the same page. This will be followed by a discussion period. We will continue to have a panel discussion session at the end of the topical sessions as in the past.

The Virtual Conference Platform

We are hosting the event on a novel platform called Hopin. This event is going to be very different than your typical Zoom call. We chose the platform because it has elements designed to replicate and in-person conference. These special elements include the ability to pull someone aside for a private breakout discussion (up to 5 people) and a virtual expo center where participants can explore and learn about COSMOS projects and sponsors. We will be providing COSMOS-specific Hopin user guides for speakers, attendees, and sponsors in the upcoming weeks.
